Navajo Ply

I decided that the Bluefaced Leicester should be a roughly-fingering weight yarn. Having only spun bulky stuff on the wheel so far, this was a bit of a tall order and took a lot of playing around with the tension and drafting to get the right amount of twist. I tried spinning up a few ounces of it and today I had my first go at navajo plying. This makes a sort-of-three-ply yarn from one single and is therefore a little bit magic. It's also great for maintaining the colour change in multicoloured yarns. However, it does look a little bit tricky when you first come across it. Essentially it's like a very long crochet chain, but twisted so the chains just disappear into the yarn.

Once you get going, it's actually pretty straightforward, although due to too little twist in the single in places it was prone to breaking occasionally. I can also see how a separate lazy Kate would be useful as the bobbin really needs to be behind you to keep the tension on all three strands at the same time.
